Summer birthday cake and champagne
The assignment:
an after-dinner gathering featuring just cake and champagne
The goal:
color, color, color
Tricks to pulling off the look:
1. Stack cake stands for added height
2. Use long-stem roses for visual interest
3. Add several pops of coordinating color
A small, but tall, cake
Even though this was an intimate celebration for five, I still wanted to honor the birthday girl with a big look. One of the easiest ways to add visual interest to any look is to vary the heights of things. I decided to stack the cake stands since the cake was on the smaller side, and using extra-tall candles made the cake feel even taller.
Using long-stem roses
Long-stem roses in a high vase kept things feeling tall, and folding back the outer petals of each rose made things feel full. The roses also lifted the peach color so that there was visual interest at several heights on the table. Including other textures (the gold leaves, floral picks, chiffon, and wood grain) kept the table looking full and intentional in the absence of a full spread of party treats.
Pops of color everywhere
This was a rare opportunity for me to experiment with silk flowers. These are the exact same flowers I used for this look, and I was thrilled to use them again to create something new. My absolute favorite part of the table is the champagne flutes. I loved that each guest could choose their own color, and as an added bonus, the orange flute matched the champagne label perfectly. The gold rim was carried through the look in the candle holders and leaves, while the silk flowers tied into the flute colors. All of the bright colors contrasted so beautifully with the deep brown of the cake and wood grain of the cake stands and table. This was one of the easiest looks to put together and I just love the way it turned out. The silk flowers are easy to handle, budget friendly, and took minutes to put into place. I’m excited to see what else I can do with them!
