Brown and cream thanksgiving table

The assignment:

a Thanksgiving table for 28 that feels inclusive and warm without using any gold

The goal:

feature several shades of brown on a background of cream and silver while using as many candles as possible

Tricks to pulling off this look:

1. Be intentional with the brown

2. Commit to only using one accent metal

3. Avoid using plastic decor/serve ware and opt for glass, metal, and wood whenever possible

Being intentional with brown

Knowing that I wanted to create a brown Thanksgiving didn’t mean going out to buy everything brown (which isn’t easy to find). Instead, it meant being intentional about placing the brown and using several shades and textures to keep the look dimensional.  The brown in this look was reserved primarily for the place settings and glass pumpkins. The table linens, florals, and candles were different shades of cream. Using the taper candles in cream visually lifted the color and helped create a beautiful setting for the carefully selected browns.

Using only one accent metal

This was more challenging than it sounds, especially given my vast collection of gold. I knew that I had to commit to only using silver if I wanted to achieve the elegance I had in mind.  This meant the candle holders, chargers, and cutlery, all the way down to the leaf on the ceramic name holder pumpkins had to be silver.

Opting for glass, metal, and wood (when possible)

I wanted each guest to feel the elegance of the occasion as much as possible, and this meant using authentic materials instead of plastic.  This was achieved by using metal chargers, glass pumpkins, and real wood.
