A sushi celebration, but make it earl grey
The assignment:
create an intimate sushi experience for 10 featuring the colors, feeling, and taste of earl grey
The goal:
incorporate the experience of earl grey into each dessert and create a color palette that captures the feeling
Tricks to pulling off the look:
1. Decide if earl grey evokes feelings of warmth or coolness
2. Choose only one focus color and make everything else a variation of that color
3. Create desserts and source prepared food items featuring the taste of earl grey
Deciding the “feel” of earl grey
In order to come up with a palette for this party, I first had to decide what earl grey felt like. For me, it has a “cool” feel and I wanted to express that feeling with my color choices. This party took place in early October, so the weather definitely played into that “cool” feeling.
Selecting one focus color
I selected purple as the main color, and I wanted to incorporate as many shades as possible to give dimension and movement to the look. I also wanted to extend that into the dessert experience (macarons and birthday candles). It was important to push the color purple all the way into the greys of the napkins to the lavender of the balloon garland, which keeps the visual interest high.
Adding the taste of earl grey
An earl grey party is not complete without the distinctive taste of earl grey. This was a fun opportunity to extend the theme all the way to the guests’ tastebuds and included earl grey macarons, London fog cake, and earl grey-infused truffles and ganache. A full-flavored experience was had by all!
